Art Valais brings the art of the great metropolises to the heart of the Alps, questioning and raising public awareness of the value of our natural and cultural resources.

This lively exhibition, free of charge and on view all year round, covers more than 50 Valais regions and an Alpine territory of 5,224 km², almost 50 times the size of the city of Paris. Here, renowned Swiss and international artists come together to create engaging works inspired by the local cultural and geographical context. More than an open-air museum, Art Valais is a story to be experienced and discovered in real time.

The project, founded by artist Jasm One (Issam Rezgui), is led by the Art Valais Wallis association (AVW), in collaboration with the Communes, the State of Valais, a monitoring group and an international jury.

Engagé dans un premier parcours basé sur le thème de l’eau, Art Valais amène l’art des grandes métropoles à s’inviter au cœur des Alpes pour questionner et sensibiliser le grand public à la valeur de nos ressources naturelles et culturelles.

Cette exposition vivante, gratuite et visible toute l’année, s’étend sur plus de 50 régions valaisannes et un territoire alpin de 5 224 km² représentant près de 50 fois la superficie de la ville de Paris. Les artistes suisses et internationaux de renom y sont rassemblés pour créer des œuvres engagées et inspirées du contexte culturel et géographique local.

An international artistic residence at the heart of a prestigious wineyard

In 2020, the Mont d'Or estate in Sion sealed a partnership with Art Valais Wallis (AVW) by making available to the association the manor house, a superb 200 m2 building built in the 19th century, in order to host renowned artists and contribute to the development of a local and sustainable heritage.

With its exceptional setting and proximity to the town of Sion, AVW has made the Résidence a unique place of inspiration and interaction, in perpetual motion. Set in the heart of a 24-hectare wineyard, the manor house offers a variety of spaces for living, working, researching, creating and relaxing. Each year, the Résidence welcomes around thirty Swiss and international artists, and offers a number of exhibitions and mediation activities focusing on contemporary urban art and sustainable development.

Une résidence artistique internationale au cœur d'un prestigieux Domaine viticole

En 2020, le domaine Mont d’Or à Sion scellait un partenariat avec Art Valais Wallis (AVW) en mettant à disposition de l’association le manoir, une superbe bâtisse de 200 m2 construite au XIXème, afin d’y accueillir des artistes renommés et contribuer au développement d'un patrimoine local et durable.

Avec son cadre exceptionnel et sa proximité avec la ville de Sion, AVW a fait de la Résidence un lieu d’inspiration et d'interaction unique, en perpétuel mouvement. Situé au cœur d’un domaine de 24 hectares, le manoir offre plusieurs espaces de vie, de travail, de recherche, de création mais aussi de détente. Chaque année la Résidence y accueille une trentaine d’artistes suisses et internationaux et propose plusieurs expositions et médiations autour de l’art urbain contemporain et du développement durable.

 

From Paris to the star gate, for a celestial art piece

Developed during and in response to the exceptional situation of COVID-19, "Spray Positive" presents the creation of a living, ephemeral exhibition of contemporary urban art, spread across different locations in Switzerland. The project aims to support regions, artists and audiences across the country with installations offering a dialogue between the environment, local heritage and the vision of the selected artist.

The program kicked off on July 17 at an altitude of 2,200 metres, at the Observatoire Astronomique de St-Luc (Valais), with the first cube imagined by Parisian artist Philippe Baudelocque.

De Paris à la porte des étoiles, pour une œuvre céleste

Développé pendant et en réponse à la situation exceptionnelle du COVID-19, «Spray Positive» présente la création d’une exposition vivante et éphémère d’art urbain contemporain., répartie dans différents lieux de Suisse. Le projet vise à soutenir les régions, les artistes et à faire voyager le public à travers le pays avec la réalisation d’installations offrant un dialogue entre l’environnement, le patrimoine local et la vision de l’artiste sélectionné.

La programmation a débuté le 17 juillet à 2’200 mètres d’altitude, à l’Observatoire Astronomique de St-Luc (Valais) avec le premier cube imaginé par l’artiste parisien Philippe Baudelocque.

Letters of nobility through the faces of Martin Bodmer and Nicolas Bouvier

After the peaks of the Val d'Anniviers, Spray Positive is now in Geneva, in the gardens of the splendid Manoir de Cologny, with a new installation and a mediation program of events.

Jasm One has invited local artist S.W.A.L.T to create an art piece highlighting the cultural bridge between the art of historical writing and that of urban expression. From tag to portrait, the artist pays tribute to two figures who left their mark on Colognese life. Through their faces, he highlights texts from the exceptional heritage collection of the Fondation Martin Bodmer in Cologny.

Après les sommets du Val d’Anniviers, c’est à Genève dans les jardins du splendide Manoir de Cologny que Spray Positive propose une nouvelle installation et un programme événementiel de médiation.

Jasm One invite l’artiste local S.W.A.L.T i pour créer une oeuvre valorisant le pont culturel entre l’art de l’écriture historique et celle de l’expression urbaine. Du tag au portrait, l’artiste rend hommage à deux personnages ayant marqué la vie colognote. A travers leur visage, il met en lumière des textes issus de la collection patrimoniale d’exception de la Fondation Martin Bodmer présente à Cologny.

A unique concept bringing together the greatest urban artists from 5 continents to magnify art and wine

In 2012, at the request of and in collaboration with Yvo Mathier and Dominique Locher, Jasm One imagined and conceptualized this unprecedented project leading to the creation of monumental contemporary installations - doomed to disappear through the action of sharing.

The famous artists brought together for the first time in Switzerland by Jasm One were chosen to transpose the diversity of universes and the universal dimension in which urban art and wine have the capacity to take us on a journey. The success of the project led to the concept being bought out in 2013 by a Paris-based media production and distribution company.

Le succès du projet amena au rachat du concept en 2013 par une société de production et de diffusion médiatique basée à Paris.

Europe's first legal graffiti network

With 13 walls, 3,000 m2 of available space and three years of procedures, Jasm One, with the support and collaboration of the City of Sion, created Europe's first officially authorized legal graffiti network. Fifteen years after the completion of this pioneering project, the dedicated spaces are still painted every week by local and international artists visiting the Valais capital.

Avec 13 murs, 3000 m2 de surfaces disponibles et trois ans de procédures, Jasm One créa avec le soutien et la collaboration de la Ville de Sion, le premier réseaux graffiti légal autorisé officiel en Europe. Quinze après l'aboutissement de ce projet précurseur, les espaces dédiés sont encore repeints chaques semaines par des artistes locaux ou internationaux de passage dans la capitale valaisanne.

Two group shows to showcase the emerging art scene

It was at two of the canton's leading institutions, Ferme Asile in Sion (2006) and Le Manoir in Martigny (2007), that Jasm One was given the opportunity to organize two group exhibitions showcasing the emerging Valais art scene. The numerous visitors were able to discover and meet 48 painters, sculptors, photographers and video artists.

C'est au sein de deux institutions phares du canton, à la Ferme Asile de Sion (2006), puis au Manoir de Martigny (2007), qu'il a été donné l'opportunité à Jasm One d'organiser deux expositions collectives présentant la scène artistique valaisanne émergente. Le public venu en nombre aura pu découvrir et rencontrer 48 artistes peintres, sculpteurs, photographes et vidéastes.

First graffiti festival in the capital

Three years after obtaining the first legal wall, the collaboration and trust established between the City of Sion and Jasm One led to the implementation of a new, larger project, involving the transformation of an 800m2 historic building in the heart of the city. To meet this challenge at the time, Jasm One succeeded in convincing the authorities and attracting the interest of graffiti artists by developing a concept capable of creating a relevant visual unity while leaving the artists complete freedom of expression.

In just one weekend, the 50 invited graffiti artists from Switzerland and Europe transformed the municipal swimming pool and its surrounding area into a monumental collective work of art. DJs, breakers and rappers were also invited to make this event the first urban culture festival in the Valais capital.

Trois ans après l'obtention du premier mur légal, la collaboration et la confiance établis entre la Ville de Sion et Jasm One ont conduit à la mise en place d'une nouveau projet plus important, comprenant la transformation d'un bâtiment historique de 800m2 au coeur de la cité. Pour réaliser ce défi à cette époque là, Jasm One réussi de convaincre les autorités et intéresser les graffeurs en développant un concept capable de créer une unité visuelle pertinente tout en laissant l’entière liberté d’expression aux artistes.

En un week end, les 50 graffeurs de suisse et d'Europe invités ont métamorphosé la piscine municipale et son quartier en une oeuvre collective monumentale. DJs, Breakers et Rappeurs ont également été conviés pour faire de cet événement le premier festival des cultures urbaines au sein de la capitale valaisanne.

Forerunners of urban culture in Valais

Founded in 2004 by Jasm One and seven other friends, VOC-A-SION is a cultural and artistic association that fights violence, discrimination and racism, and promotes the social and cultural integration of young people through the values and disciplines of hip-hop.

It has built its reputation by creating innovative and unifying projects such as break dance championships, multi-disciplinary shows and workshops in dance, writing, DJing and graffiti. The association has played a decisive role in the development of urban culture in Valais.

Two decades later, the VOC-A-SION legacy lives on, with members still actively involved in launching new artistic projects and professionalizing them within socio-cultural structures.

Précurseurs des cultures urbaines en Valais

Fondée en 2004 par Jasm One et sept autres amis, VOC-A-SION est une association culturelle et artistique qui combat la violence, la discrimination, le racisme et encourage l'intégration sociale et culturelle des jeunes à travers les valeurs et les disciplines du Hip-Hop .

Elle a acquis sa renommée en créant des projets novateurs et fédérateurs comme les championnats de break dance, des spectacles pluridisciplinaires et des ateliers de danse, d'écriture, de Djing, et de graffiti. L’association a joué un rôle déterminant dans le développement des cultures urbaines en Valais.

Deux décénnie plus tard, l'héritage de VOC-A-SION perdure, avec des membres toujours activement engagés dans le lancement de nouveaux projets artistiques et leur professionnalisation au sein de structures socio-culturelles.

First association and first authorized wall

It was in 2002, after a wave of arrests, that Jasm One decided to found the region's first graffiti artists' association, named WGA for Walliser Graffiti Artists. The aim was simple: to obtain free spaces for expression and give anyone who wished the opportunity to paint without the risk of seeing their future compromised by heavy fines or criminal penalties. The 500m2 underground space at Cour Roger Bonvin in Sion was the first to be obtained. Still in use today, it marked the starting point for all subsequent projects.

C’est en 2002, après une vague d’arrestation importante que Jasm One décide de fonder la première association de graffeurs de la région, nommée WGA pour Walliser Graffiti Artists. L’objectif est simple: obtenir des espaces libre d’expression et donner la possibilité, à qui le souhaite, de peindre sans risque de voir son avenir compromis par de lourdes amendes ou peines pénales. Le souterrain de 500m2 du Cour Roger Bonvin à Sion fut le premier espace obtenu. Toujours en activité aujourd'hui, il marque le point de départ de tous les projets qui suivront.
